Decided not to get a PS4 or Xbox1 but going to build a Gaming PC. Any advice

I am not even gonna attempt a custom water cooled PC

 

1) Due to cost

2) Because I would end up with leaks on the connectors / pipes and water and electric just don't mix

3) Because due to point 2 would cost me a lot of money to replace any items where there were any leaks

I happen to know that @ict-direct will have a monster on their stand at BETT (B62).

I saw it in their office before Christmas and this thing growls!

Twin hex core Xeons and 48GB RAM for starters anyone?

It will be running various 3d benchmarking suites for your amusement and pleasure :)

IIRC it's also a cheaper than the one @mac_shinobi is pricing up.

I think they had a GTX 750Ti in there. Don't quote me on that as it's @ICTDirect_Dave 's baby.

Actually, given his current state that's probably not the best phrase to use :)

 

I don't feel so bad now as got the gtx 760

Nervous about a couple of things so any videos or help would be good

 

1) installation of the S36

2) Do I need to use plastic grommets etc so the case doesn't short out the motherboard etc. How does that work now??

Also not seen the top hard drive cage being used so do they have a sata data and power back plane or need sata power and data as required for the four drives on the phantom 820 case ?

I'm curious about one thing on the S36..... where is the res? Does it not come with one??? Do you fill the pump directly via a designated port and let it circle around the system until it's full? Do you fill it via the rad? (This is why you have a custom loop.) Thanks @Garacesh

 

Anyhow, as for the s36, C L E A N the rad. Most of the time the rads are clean, but some have some form of oil on them, and it's thick oil, so it's best to give it a thorough wash.

 

Installing the S36 should be a doddle. Install mobo cpu etc etc first, and S36 last.

It can go either way with mounting it, but remember what we discussed @mac_shinobi. If you want it so that the fans PUSH out the air of the case, you'll need extra long screws. Otherwise, just mount it to the top of the case, and see how you go about the fans. If they push the air back into the case, consider having 2 - 4 fans pulling out (side \ back) and the front + x2 at bottom pulling in.

 

Next phase will be filling / testing. This is a bugger to do on this system Mac... which is why i recommended the custom loop.

 

Get a box of THICK tissues (kleenex are perfect) and place them all around the tubing, and over the components in your system that if *god forbid* the system leaked, it'd hit. This should be gfx, areas of the mobo, psu, hdd etc etc. Just place them over, don't throttle them inside anything. About 4 tissues over the gfx is safe, as a example.

 

To FILL the system.... you need to fill it with your purchased liquid through the dedicated port on the cpu block / pump. Now, you can install the CPU block onto the CPU and do it, or do it outside of the case. However, it's recommended you do it inside the case. Get yourself some Primochill advanced tubing 13/10 - clear (about 1 meter) and see if you can safely add that to a 13/10mm fitting. This will allow you to fill the system safely. OOOOO also get a funnel. They help.

 

Now i don't know if its included, but you should get one of these XSPC PSU Bridging Connector (24 Pin) []

 

It'll start the psu but not the mobo / hdds. This will allow the pump to run and pump around the liquid through the closed system. As it's doing this, keep filling until you can't fill anymore. Once you've reached that point, quickly shut off the system. Now, wait about 1 min for the fluid to settle. Slowly and i mean this, SLOWLY, remove the tubing and then quickly replace the tubing / fittings with the dedicated nut / bolt / whatever was there before.

 

Heart attack over. That's the worst part of it. Let me try and recap.

 

 

  1. Make sure your system is built bar the watercooling unit.
  2. Remove everything related to the WC kit
  3. Clean the rad thoroughly
  4. Install the fans onto the rad in the desired position
  5. Attach the rad onto the case
  6. Cover the internal components with tissues, 4 over each component should be safe. (careful not to block the psu too much)
  7. XSPC PSU Bridging Connector (24 Pin) [] attach that to the motherboard 24atx pin (or 20 pin?)
  8. TEST to make sure when you power on the system, only the psu is running. If not, remove all sata cables, fan, and gfx from the mobo. (keep the bridger connected)
  9. If you don't have already (unless they have a specific fitting they provide) get yourself some primochill advanced tubing 1 meter with fittings. 13/10mm. AND a funnel!
  10. Attach the fitting to the fill port.
  11. Attach the tube to the fitting and tighten well.
  12. Put the funnel inside the other section of the tube.
  13. Fill with desired liquid.
  14. Power on the system while filling. The fluid will pump around the system.
  15. Once the system has enough liquid, it may start entering the fill port tubing. This is your message to power down the system.
  16. Wait 1 - 2 min. Prepare to replace the fitting with the original fixture.
  17. Remove the FITTING (not tubing) and without panicking, put back in the fitting.
  18. There may be some spillage, but as long as you're calm, contained, and have covered everything well, you'll be fine.
  19. If there is spillage, press onto the liquid with the tissues, dabbing on and off to remove. Keep doing until satisfied.
  20. Collect yourself, and add components back into the system if previously removed.
  21. Replace all tissues with fresh ones over components.
  22. For the next 30 mins, you will be checking for leaks.
  23. Power on pc, leave for 10 seconds and turn off. Do this about 30 times with 1 min between to check for leaks.

 

You're now free and a beginner in the watercooling world. Welcome.

 

As for the grommets, what the hell you on about? lol

I'm not sure. Again, this is @ICTDirect_Dave 's baby (I really should stop using that term!) and he has the info.

It's based on a HP workstation and I recall being shocked at how affordable it was.

We'll get pics up on Tuesday (setup day) if John can get it unpacked in time :)

I think the correct term is 'Risers'.

By risers, I assume you mean stand-offs (a.k.a the metal posts that @mac_shinobi is referring to)? :confused:

Better guide on how you would / can install the motherboard onto the stand offs if you don't require plastic washers or similar ?
