LosOjos Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 Also, why an SSD and a hybrid? IMO, the performance boost from a hybrid isn't really worth the extra outlay... 1
mac_shinobi Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 Only a tiny thing, but if you can order your thermal paste from eBay, Arctic Silver 5 is only £5.14 - considered one of the best you can buy: Artic Silver 5 - Thermal Compound/paste - 3.5G - high density- 99.9% pure silver | eBay I thought AS 5 had a long setting period Im going to use the included tim from the S36 for cpu. I have an xbox 360 so getting the mx 4 for that or if i run out of the tim included with the S36
mac_shinobi Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 Also, why an SSD and a hybrid? IMO, the performance boost from a hybrid isn't really worth the extra outlay... SSD For OS and Apps SSHD instead of a wd black for steam Two wd reds in raid one
Garacesh Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 Also, are you not buying a GPU? xP Raid 1 does make sense, fair enough. I did suspect.

If it's not for the new build though I wouldn't worry too much - once the 360 starts getting RROD, I doubt it'll last long enough afterwards to warrant buying really expensive thermal paste
LosOjos Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 SSD For OS and Apps SSHD instead of a wd black for steam Two wd reds in raid one RAID makes sense as does SSD, but I'd seriously consider dropping the SSHD in favour of a decent HDD if it's for Steam. The SSD part acts as a cache, so learns which files you access most over time and loads them from SSD instead to give a performance boost. As you'll be playing games, if you play one or two games regulalry, they'll get their core files cached and Steam client will too, however I doubt you'll see any noticeable performance boost from that... Your choice of course I've put SSHDs in machines where I couldn't afford an SSD in the budget, but I'd never bother with one unless it was down to budget constraints personally

Whats that mean
LosOjos Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 RROD ?? Whats that mean Red Ring of Death, usually caused by overheating - I assumed that's why you were looking to replace the thermal paste in your 360

Apparently the 1tb black isn't a true black drive ? Is there a 1 or 2tb drive thats a similar price ?
mac_shinobi Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 Red Ring of Death, usually caused by overheating - I assumed that's why you were looking to replace the thermal paste in your 360 Yes not tried to power it on for a long time so cant remember what it does etc but plenty of youtube / ifixit guides ref the 360
Sunnyknight Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 @mac_shinobi Good build. Only downfall, not an i7 or custom wc loop. Other than that, good on ya lad! 1
LosOjos Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 Which performance drive ? Apparently the 1tb black isn't a true black drive ? Is there a 1 or 2tb drive thats a similar price ? I'll let someone else recommend a HDD, all I'm saying is that personally, I don't think the performance boost you'll get from that SSHD is worth the extra cost. As an OS drive, you'd see some improvement (which is why I used one where budget won't allow for an SSD as the OS drive), but for Steam, apart from the client loading a bit quicker I doubt you'd see much difference.
Garacesh Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 @mac_shinobi Good build. Only downfall, not an i7 or custom wc loop. I like to throw my money around and that's not nearly pricey enough. Other than that, good on ya lad! Does look like a good build, though. I certainly wouldn't turn it down if I were offered it. 1
mac_shinobi Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 Going with the ST2000DM001 from aria http://www.aria.co.uk/SuperSpecials/Other+products/2TB+Seagate+Barracuda+ST2000DM001+3.5%22+SATA+III+Hard+Drive+-+HDD+?productId=48301&source=pcpartpicker This a good drive for steam : 2tb instead of 1tb as well ??
LosOjos Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 Does look like a good build, though. I certainly wouldn't turn it down if I were offered it. Oh yeah it does look great, I'd love that machine as is! Only pointing out things I'd change given the choice to try to help, not p' on your bonfire
Arthur Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 I'm going to use the included tim from the S36 for cpu. I have an xbox 360 so getting the mx 4 for that or if i run out of the tim included with the S36 You would have to be doing something very wrong in order to use a whole tube of thermal paste for a single PC. A little goes a long way.
Arthur Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 Only downfall, not an i7 or custom wc loop. @mac_shinobi's part list includes an i7-4790K? 1
mac_shinobi Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 @mac_shinobi's part list includes an i7-4790K? All ordered now and yes an i7 4790k ??
mac_shinobi Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 Parts from aria were a bit more so all in all aprox £1350 MS keyboard was aprox £23 from ebuyer so got that instead of from amazon
mac_shinobi Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 You would have to be doing something very wrong in order to use a whole tube of thermal paste for a single PC. A little goes a long way. lol yes exactly this - Got the MX 4 from amazon and they were selling the 8g ( 8 gram tube ) for less than the 4 gram tube, so got an 8 gram one instead I presume 8G as in 8 Grams ( whatever measurement it is meant to be ) Looking forward to all this stuff now - can finally build my pc once I have gotten all the parts, selected free delivery options where possible, aria charged me £9 for delivery, so should get a few items tomorrow Totally excited !!!
mac_shinobi Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 @mac_shinobi Good build. Only downfall, not an i7 or custom wc loop. Other than that, good on ya lad! I am not even gonna attempt a custom water cooled PC 1) Due to cost 2) Because I would end up with leaks on the connectors / pipes and water and electric just don't mix 3) Because due to point 2 would cost me a lot of money to replace any items where there were any leaks It is an i7 - 4790k @Sunnyknight
Garacesh Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 If I completely replace my rig (even with mid-range parts, new mobo, going from an A10 to an AMD FX 8350) my build is going to come to about the same amount lol. 1
