COD Advanced Warfare...?

So we begrudgingly let our kids play COD WOW/Ghosts/BlackOPs etc - despite them being well under the 16 rating.

 

The new COD Advanced Warfare is rated 18, the kids assure it is the same in terms of killing/violence etc...

 

Could anyone explain why the new game is rated 18 ? common sense would suggest it is "worse" - but having

no experience in these things I don't know...

 

Any help much appreciated !

Horrible mother that I am, I refused to buy 18 games for my son when he wasn't... no argument was allowed. He is nearly 19 now and seems unfazed when I asked him just now how much he minded... "Well you sort of had to, didn't you?" I suspect I am lucky to have got away with my stance.

 

Edit: I don't pretend that he wasn't playing said 18 games at his mates' house... I just wouldn't buy them for him.

Personally and take this how you want as I am only 20 myself but my mum used to stop me buying 18 video games when I was little until about age 14 when I finally broke her. It depends on the ages of your children and how mature I suppose you think they are.

Like what @elsiegee40 says you won't completely stop them playing said games, they will play them some way or another normally around a friends house, it definitely didn't do anything to prevent me playing the actual game so they are going to experience it one way or another, or they could simply watch YouTube stars like PewDiePie play them and still essentially see the content.

 

It's very difficult nowadays to keep something from your children, if you want my take on it I would play the game yourself and see if anything shocks you, I have played COD and yes there's blood, shooting and bad words on it but it's nothing like other 18 games, to name a few Outlast, Dead Space, Grand Theft Auto which can all be OTT. I found the COD AW game to be quite the same as the others and if you've let them play the others you shouldn't have much to worry about.

 

My overall take is that as long as your children are old enough and mature enough to understand the difference between a video game and real life the most a game can do is give them nightmares which I think you'll find the horror games kids know they'd be scared of they stay well away from anyway.

We cannot really tell you to go out and break the law by purchasing an 18 rated game for an under 18. Less 14 year olds in voice chat the better TBH...

According to the PEGI info, it's due to "Extreme violence - Multiple, motiveless killing - Violence towards defenceless people - Strong language"

Thanks for all the (mostly!) helpful comments.

 

In the end we resisted buying the game and bought them good old fashioned bow and arrows instead. (They love Hunger Games...)

 

Strange how physical "weapons" are deemed far more socially acceptable than virtual violence.
