help recovering external mac drive

DP use an external drive to store data through a mac share and the drive has stopped working... And it appears that super-duper stopped working last year but no-one had checked since then

 

anyhow I can plug the raw drive into my PC and it installs and spins up but the drive is not initialized and says unallocated. (Is this normal behaviour for an HS+ drive on Windows 7?)

 

I tried the drive on a different mac using our own sata to usb adaptor but the drive wouldn't (automount?) how should I proceed, I think the data is there but the partition info is fragged.

 

(fix it on a mac or is there a PC way of fixing this? Can windows 7 read hs+? The mac server btw is old it's still IBM based big silver plastic one. with a speak visible on the front.

Yes that's normal behaviour, windows won't read those file systems. However there's plenty of software that'll help with that.

HFSExplorer will read it for you. If you need to go deeper and recover something (files, partitions etc) then testdisk will also handle it.

It sounds like an old QuickSilver PowerMac. Thats going back a few years

 

HFS+ can't be read by Windows. I've used a few third party Windows apps in the past but they can be more trouble than they are worth. I would connect the drive to a Mac and look in Disk Utility first to see if that can mount it. If it can't, DiskWarrior may be able to help.

 

If the drive is physically broken though you might be out of luck.
