Two queries...

One regards licensing of 2012 R2 Standard... Can I confirm that Windows 2012 Standard will allow you to run 3 instances of Windows on 1 physical host?

 

Also, I'm just about to configure my first deployment and would like to know whether to go down the road of the core install or the full install?

I thought it only allowed you to install 2 virtual Windows 2012 servers per standard license.

You can install the free Hyper-V and then your 2 server on top of it.

Sorry, meant one instance for the host, the other two for virtual servers... My bad!

from what i remember yes BUT the host os can do nothing but host vms's iirc so you cant install any other roles like say fileserver

id honestly rather have a gui then if things do go wrong you don't have to start looking up powershell commands you've only ever used twice

Our Hyper-V is running as Core, but we did have a 8.1 and another 2012 server to connect to the Hyper-V Manager to create the VM.

 

Ideally you would not want your Hypervisor to be running a GUI, but it does not make much difference.

The free MS Hyper-V install is only a core mode installation.
