Photographic compression / conversion software

Hello Edugeekers,

 

I wonder if anyone could care recommend to me how they handle the management of their schools photographic archives ? at present here we have a media drive which is massive totalling 470gb of file space on the NAS box their on, with at least 10 years probably closer to 15 of photographs taken from the school, from the look through I have had it seems that its houses 99% of the photographs in there are 3mb+ jpg files taken with the schools Nikon DSLR cameras.

 

It is in need of a major cleanout to be fair and a search for some duplications as the NAS doesnt offer things like dedup, its a buffalo linkstation host at the moment, but if I can get it down to managable filesizes ideally I would want to investigate hosting the fileserver on our virtualisation platform.

 

Is there any free mass conversion software that anyone would recommend for running to convert them down into more managable file sizes/formats.

IrfanView also has batch file management built in, as well as generally being an excellent little image viewer.

Fast stone photo resizer. It will resize any pictures it finds if you put the top level folder in to be resized. Its a bit of a powerfull piece of software for an image resizer. Edited December 5, 2014 by timbo343

Also consider whether you need to or even should be retaining photos of students that have now left the school in line with data protection policy.

I use FileMinimizer (came free with an external drive I bought) compression rates of around 80-90% on photos and little loss in visible quality.
