There are 6 people in the OS team who manage Windows and Linux systems - this post is focussed on Windows but Linux experience would be useful (we have many users running Linux desktops who need to connect to Windows servers and vice versa).

 

Imperial has a very large set of Windows machines; the OS team manage the servers provided centrally (mostly virtualised on ESX; there are currently about 700 of them), manage the desktop and server Windows builds for other users. We have a large number of research departments running Windows servers for a variety of purposes. One quick stat - over 15,000 desktops running Windows 7 logged on to the domain in the past 3 weeks.
