Clients not reporting into WSUS

I am having trouble getting my client machines to report into WSUS. It seems that wired machines are OK once I run a WindowsUpdateDiagnostic.diagcab on them. How can I automate the running of this rather than having to go round each client individually?

 

FYI - It is Windows Server 2012R2 with a single VM acting as the DC going to x86 Windows 7 Clients

If it's a new server doing it you might want to check what port you're sending out in the WSUS config/GPO. Noticed when doing new server 2012R2 servers it uses a new port so needs it in the link e.g. http://wsus01:8530 rather than http://wsus01 as pre-2012 would use 80 by default.

 

Slightly off subject but might want to check.

have looked and both "Set the intranet update service for detecting updates:" and "Set the intranet statistics server" are pointing to "http://servername:8530"

Ah ok Just thought to check.

 

Take it firewall all good too? As in are they getting updates just not reporting? Or aren't they doing either?

Domain Firewall is disabled. It appears that machines are reporting in once I have manually run the diagnostic tool, picking up and installing updates. However when I try half an hour later (due to more updates becoming available), I have to run the diagnostic tool again!

were they all created from the same image and was it properly sysprepped as if pcs arnt sysprepped right wsus can see lots of pcs as 1 pc as they have the same sid

Did you check the clients Windows Update logs? To see if it's trying and failing or just doing nothing etc?

Yes they were all built from a FAT (or Reference) Image that had all Windows Updates up to July 2014 installed plus a few small bits of software like movie maker etc.

Upon further consultation with a colleague, he is under the impression that we would have met with a lot more issues than just clients reporting into WSUS if there was an issue with the sysprepping of the image :/
