Soz, web devs: Google snatches its Wallet off the table • The Register

If you sell digital goods on a website using Google Wallet to take payment, you have a little over three months to find an alternative.

The service is being “retired” on 2 March 2015 and will not be replaced. Google argues that there are enough alternative solutions, which might translate to mean “no one was using it”.

My bold. I think I used it just once since it was launched. And that was from some obscure site if memory serves correct!

Used it once years ago to pay for an external WD hard drive and maybe once or twice after that to buy a couple of other things

Not used it for a long time and now it is getting axed anyway , meh

PayPal / Apple pay / Pay via Debit or Credit card so plenty of other ways to pay for services or goods anyway

The key words being DIGITAL goods and API...

Here is what's really happening. The "Google Wallet for digital goods" API is closing. The key word here is DIGITAL goods. This API was for in-app purchases for Facebook/Google+ games on the web.

  • Not the PayPal competitor for third party stores selling physical goods.
  • Not NFC for brick and mortar.
  • Not Android in-app purchases or anything Google Play related.
  • Not the Physical Wallet Card.

@Dos_Box. Your thread title is wildly inaccurate since Google Wallet ISN'T getting axed. :(

Never used it to pay for digital goods - always used it online to pay for physical goods ie went onto website that accepted google wallet as a form of payment, placed item into e-basket and checked out using google wallet, paid successfully and said item(s) were delivered

So is it just the digital side of google wallet that is being axed then ie you can't use google wallet to pay for digital goods like on facebook etc yet you can still use it for physical goods ?

The "Google Wallet for digital goods" API is closing.

Can anyone recommend particular alternatives for taking payments for digital goods - PayPal, Stripe?

Braintree - it incorporates a few major payment methods in to one API

Probably a good system, but their website doesn't seem to work through our Lightspeed filter at the moment. It could just be a temporary problem with their site, or something that can be added to Lightspeed's default allow list.
