ozydave Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 Afternoon Teacher has just asked for Unity game engine to be installed. Just wondered if anyone has it installed across network for students to use. If so any problems you have had. or Is it all going to go swimmingly :-) Cheers
bennz Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 I've had to take this on at the request of teaching staff but elected not go down a full network install as it gives students access to play games outside of its purpose, installed the free version it on two PC's, it was a straight forward normal "next, next" install all worked fine had no issues, few months in now. One note - Unity can access an asset store within the app to download extra things like scripts/ models you need a user account to do this, the staff that requested Unity used their details to create one. I have also told them to keep close eyes on these machines 1
Scrambles Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 We have an edu license for Unity for 20 seats For the most part its fine, we had to allow anonymous access to karma.unity.com (I think, could be wrong on the URL) to allow it through the proxy to use the asset store. We DID have some issues with students saving work ... They would save on to the network share then one day all of their work would be missing from the file. Restoring backups and all of the work was still missing. This led us to believe that the work (or at least some parts of it) were being saved locally on the machines. We contacted support about this but it was never resolved, though the issue has never cropped up again. So can't say if it was a handful of students saving their work wrong, or there was a larger issue that we couldn't fix. 1
ozydave Posted November 10, 2014 Author Posted November 10, 2014 Cheers for the info. What's it like in system resources I assume the PCs need a bit of grunt ?
Scrambles Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 I would deffo say at least 4GB RAM and a dedicated GPU if you can. We did have it running on some Optiplex 990's for a short while but found they were shutting down due to overheating. Now we run it on i7-920 with 8GB RAM and what ever the mid-range graphics card of the time was. On these systems it runs fine. You could always download the free version of unity and download some premade scenes and have a look at the performance on your systems. 1
ozydave Posted November 10, 2014 Author Posted November 10, 2014 Cheers I will give the free version a bash first. Sure the teacher that request it doesn't even know what he really wants it for! Par for the course with my lot 😡
