To head off into the long grass of OT, which is cheaper; boil a kettle, and fill the pan of pasta from it, or heat the water in the pan on the gas?

 

Gas - cheaper

Kettle - all the energy goes into the water

 

Pan is a large one, and all the flame is under it, not escaping up the side
