creating .msi files...

Right. I MUST be missing something here. I'm trying to make an MSI from an EXE. I'm using WinINSTALL LE.

 

Run discover.

 

Install program 'B Gone' and setup wordlist, password etc

 

Perform 'After' snapshot and an msi is created with some other files and folders.

 

If I remove the software and run the created MSI works perfectly and installs the software again... even works on another computer if I run it manually logged in with my account.

 

Any other user logs in and it doesn't work... dialog requiring FlshTray.ocx. Log back in with my account and it works fine...

 

Can anyone see what's happening here?

Was the install PC definitely clean?

No - is that a problem? The guide I first read said 'Start with a clean PC, or one that is representative of the computers in your network'

 

I don't have a clean PC available at the moment.

I don't have a clean PC available at the moment.

Always best to make packages on clean PCs, that way you can be confident that all the files you need end up in the MSI, otherwise you could find yourself in a situation where Package A only works on PCs where Package B is also installed, or Package C stops working after Package D is uninstalled - we had that here when I started, and clearing it up was a total nightmare.

 

If you can't get a clean PC for package creation and testing purposes (which personally I think is an essential tool for your job), then get some removable hard disks - I did that back in the bad old days of C2.4 and CC3, I had one test PC with a clean C2.4 hard disk and a clean CC3 hard disk in caddies, and inserted whichever I needed at the time; two PCs for the price of 1-and-a-bit.

 

In the short term, you could possibly make a second package which delivers flshtray.ocx, then deliver your package for B Gone after it.

Thanks - problem is the way it works here. I'm employed by the training centre not the school - I help the school so money is hard to find! Space too...

I need an external drive anyway but this is being sorted between my line manager and the other IT chap in the main school - it is a bit pathetic...

 

... good thing I don't like spending money if I can avoid it... shame there are so many people happy to waste money on video conferencing and IWBs but that's for a FFS

If your machine is up to it run one of the virtualisation products i.e vmware server that way you can always have a clean install client to use.

My machine isn't currently up to it as I have about 100MB free but I'll try it when my new HDD arrives
