eean Posted October 16, 2014 Posted October 16, 2014 Hi, I am looking to improve the way we store medical information in SIMS. There are 3 main sections. This is what I'm thinking: Medical Events - Event Type Lookups and Description lookups for every type of visit to the nurse imaginable. (This is already in place) - Vaccinations: Hep A 1st Dose (use date field) Hep A 2nd Dose etc... Medical Conditions Have lots of lookups for all medical conditions and their severity e.g. Asthma - Mild Asthma - Moderate Asthma - Severe Allergy - Mild Allergy - Moderate Allergy - Severe I want to be able to highlight severe conditions from the 'oh it makes them feel a bit queasy sometimes' type. Then use Summary to write the symptoms and notes to write the action? I wonder if I should be more specific with the allergies e.g. Allergy to Nuts - Mild Allergy to Nuts - Moderate Allergy to Nuts - Severe Allergy to Work - Mild etc... But then I could have a lot of lookups! Medical Notes I'm not sure what goes in here. I was thinking historic medical events that would be useful for a doctor in an emergency e.g. 'Had hole in the heart as a baby'. Ideally, I'd like to be able to create lists of medications that all the students have so we can make check-lists for trips. I'm not sure how to do this. So... what do you store in yours?
MattMitchell Posted October 20, 2014 Posted October 20, 2014 I find the whole conditions-vs-notes thing a bit odd, to be honest. It can confuse staff at all levels, and makes reporting somewhat challenging. I think it's the kind of thing that people tend to access on a per-student basis, as it's not well-suited to mass reporting
eean Posted October 20, 2014 Author Posted October 20, 2014 The medical conditions section seems pretty good. You've got the drop downs, and then summary and note linked to it. I have now discovered that the medical note is just a collection of any linked document categorised 'student medical note'. You can list them on their own OK. However, if you put them in a RTF report with medical conditions it causes the tables to go all funny and repeat all over the place!
SteveB Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 Med conditions and Notes, have to have their own tables in an RTF report as they are multiple record sets. In response to your OP, that is how I advise our schools to use them, but as long as the school is consistent you can be flexible in the use of these fields

However, if you put them in a RTF report with medical conditions it causes the tables to go all funny and repeat all over the place! This was supposed to be fixed, i.e. tightly linked to the event / condition it was written against. So the RTF should work. I don't think i fully tested it. For this reason we stopped using condition = allergy , note = nuts , and went super specific on all allergies, all conditions etc. If you want to highlight certain severe ones, you could put the severe at the front, then easily report on it, or put the coding into the code. standardised naming conventions will help here. Notes for history is difficult because they are loosly bound, you'd be better off adding an event in the past.
