Kitkatninja Posted October 12, 2014 Posted October 12, 2014 Hi All, Just wondering if anyone has thought about getting a degree via the University of the People (UoPeople)? I've been watching them since their inception and this year they got accredited by DETC (which is more of an American thing). It doesn't seem to be a diploma or degree mill, especially since the likes of Microsoft, HP, etc have partnered up with them. But to be honest, that says more about the value of what they are delivering, rather than if their qualification (the bit of paper in the end) is recognised. It's not a 100% free program as there is an application fee and end of module exam fees. But comparing it to degree programs in the UK, it looks like it's about the same cost as one module/course (which is a considerable saving). What are your thought on this? -Ken
dwhyte85 Posted October 12, 2014 Posted October 12, 2014 It looks pretty interesting, I'm sure we have something similar in the UK in terms of partnering - TVU, now West London University partnered with HP for a IT service management foundation degree - pretty sure of that. I would still opt for an OU degree, solely because it's a bit more recognized and respected here, but the format and way in which this delivers looks pretty good.
Kitkatninja Posted October 12, 2014 Author Posted October 12, 2014 Yeah, I know what you mean. I guess the real test would be in 3-4 years when graduates start to appear and if/when they go thru the UK NARIC process to see if it really compares to a UK qualification.
GrumbleDook Posted October 12, 2014 Posted October 12, 2014 After the huge cost hike of OU I've been looking at options and this seems a good one for me. Also looking at the stuff Prof. Heppell is putting together too.

The only "negative" thing (if you can call it that) that I can find is that they do not award credit for prior experiential learning, challenge examinations or achievement tests. So it's their full program... What's Prof. Heppell putting together? I've done a quick search and can't really find anything, relating to developing qualification that it...
