synaesthesia Posted October 8, 2014 Posted October 8, 2014 ARGH! Lost a VM host earlier this week thanks to a crappy Dell box/raid card. Not a problem, backups ahoy. I know the SCCM server that was hosted therein was backed up fine. Only using Windows Server Backup, but should be enough, right? The backup is present from the 5th October, great. I can mount all the drives in Win7/8 except the system drive which shows as a RAW image (hmmm) Windows Server Backup does not recognise it as a valid backup, won't let me try to restore it or anything. Utterly, utterly b*gg*r*d! Any helpful hints would be appreciated Do not fancy having to set up SCCM from scratch again! (I can probably get the data back from the database as I can mount the drive that was on, but I don't want to redo the packages )
win Posted October 8, 2014 Posted October 8, 2014 If the HDDs are still ok, then it might be easier to just replace the raid card. Otherwise no reason why windows backup shouldn't recognise it. Just make sure you're recovering from the same OS as the backup. If backed up with 2012, then build a 2012 server and run the restore from it.
synaesthesia Posted October 8, 2014 Author Posted October 8, 2014 No, unfortunately not that simple re the raid card; it corrupted the data nearly entirely, not helped by another crappy Seafail drive. Yeah, no reason I can see either. Just copied another windows backup over to the drive I was recovering from and it's picked that up straight away. I think it may well be corrupt
tmcd35 Posted October 8, 2014 Posted October 8, 2014 Slightly confused what are you trying to restore from were? You used Windows Server Backup inside the VM to backup the contents of the SCCM C: drive, or you used Windows Server Backup on the host server to backup the VHD that contains the SCCM C: drive?
win Posted October 8, 2014 Posted October 8, 2014 It's sadly sounding like you're SOL! I would do a search for backup repair tools. Here is an example: Repair Corrupt BKF File | Windows Backup File Recovery Good luck
bossman Posted October 8, 2014 Posted October 8, 2014 @synaesthesia: Are we talking VMware here? or Hyper-V? Windows Server 2012?
synaesthesia Posted October 8, 2014 Author Posted October 8, 2014 The host doesnt really make a difference, it's VMWare ESXi but the backup was Windows 2012R2 server backup. Trying to restore to a new machine (identical setup on an ESXi host). Attempting to mount the VHD in virtualbox atm wiht no luck, again showing as a RAW file system. I think the backup catalogue is corrupt, so hoping I can at least get hold of the original from the system drive.
