Home Area in Finder Sidebar

Morning All,

 

Anyone know of a way to configure the Finder Sidebar and customise what shows up. Looking to show the students home areas in the sidebar and want to remove the option to save to any other areas. I can do this on a user by user basis but anyway to do it for everyone logging in automatically?

What MDM are you using? If you configure the com.apple.sidebarlists.plist as you want it for a user. Then save the plist somewhere and use the MDM to push the plist that should help customise the sidebar for all users.

There is a way as we have got that here, when the students click finder it only takes them straight to their Home Area's, with teachers I just add it manually to their machines with a drag and drop technique

 

I'll have a trawl through my stuff and see if I can find out how I did it but I'm sure it had something to do with editing the com.apple.sidebarlists.plist in workgroup manager.

Only got 15 so doing by hand at the moment. Will look to move to Deployment Studio in the future so editing the plist could be done by hand on a machine by machine basis for the time being. How do I configure sidebarlists.plist?

It appears sidebar.plists is missing in 9.1. Can anyone confirm?

I solved this particular issue. I always like to respond with how I did things in case someone else has the same issue in the future and googles this topic.

 

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Preferences/com.apple.sidebarlists.plist.

 

Still not sure on how to edit the file or make it available to everyone as default. If someone could shine some light on that I'd be really appreciative.

Are they network (Active Directory) home folders? Would seem easier just to redirect them there

 

If not though, depending on which version of Profile Manager you have.

 

Load it up, go to device or a user group ->Settings -> Edit, scroll all all the way down to Custom -> and upload the plist file. You can edit it from there.

I had a look out of curiosity, no idea what you'd change. So perhaps that wasn't so helpful

I'm a complete noob when it comes to Macs so anything pointing me in the right direction is a positive for me.

Got to start somewhere, networked Macs aren't as awful as they first seem

 

I do think this 'local home directory' default could save people a lot of bother if it was set differently (though I do somewhat understand why it's set that way).
