Samsung gives up on Windows laptops and Chromebooks in Europe

Samsung has confirmed that it is ending sales of all of its laptops - including both Windows notebooks and Chromebooks - in Europe. The move comes as the PC market continues to struggle in the face of increasingly powerful smartphones and tablets, reducing users' dependence on 'traditional' form factors, including notebooks and desktops.

 

A Samsung spokesperson confirmed the company's plans to PC Advisor today, saying:

 

We quickly adapt to market needs and demands. In Europe, we will be discontinuing sales of laptops, including Chromebooks, for now. This is specific to the region - and is not necessarily reflective of conditions in other markets."

 

That statement appears to leave the door open for a possible return to Europe for its Windows laptops and Google Chromebooks in the future, but this remains far from certain. For now, the company remains committed to sales of those devices in other parts of the world.

Was just gonna post the same article as it came as a bit of a shock to me TBH! I can understand that Chromebooks were always likely be a niche market but I'd have thought a company like Samsung could still turn a profit selling laptops. I wonder if we'll see any of the other big players following suit?

I had a feeling the chromebooks days were numbered with them, they didn't set the world alight with their last offering, ARM just isn't an overly attractive platform for any OS in my opinion, plus there's not massive margins in Chromebooks, people expect them to be as cheap as chips now I think.

 

Chromebooks in the UK in general suffer from a lack of RAM, display's and styling options (I was railroaded to a White HP 14 here, the best of three awful colours and the only chromebook in the UK with 4gb of RAM at the time, decent machine and doesn't in any way feel underpowered)

I've only just heard about this (so much for 'ear-to-the-ground'!) the other day.

I find it bizzare that Samsung would pull out of europe, especially as they specialise in laptops. If they sold PC's I could sympathise but I thougt the laptop market was where things were heading for the big boys.
