Chromebook trial

Is anyone using Chromebooks yet in a shared education environment?

 

We use Office 365, will that be a problem? Do you need a google account? How does the management work? So many questions...

 

We are looking into the machines for our library who have requested a bank of cheap simple internet research machines.

We have just begun using 30 Chromebooks in our Library. They are managed on our Google Admin console. We had to give Google a web address to allow us to do this management and so we used our school web address which had already been added as a domain for managing Google accounts.

 

Students logon to the Chromebooks with usernames we have created for that domain so they look like: forename.surname@schoolwebaddress.

 

It is early days for us at the moment but I think that it is going well.

Shame they cant use their office 365 details to logon, or their AD details. Thats the real key I think.

I believe that we can set up one way synchronization: AD > Chromebooks so that when their passwords change in AD they also change for the Chromebooks. I will be looking onto this later, I haven't had time yet. I also want to set more policies both for the Chromebooks and the users but as they are working now this can wait. The school network is taking my time at the moment.

We have around 300 chromebooks. Students log in with their email address and passwords are synced from AD to the GApps domain, so they are essentially using their AD details. We don't use 365 but other than logging in again, there shouldn't be a problem (although no doubt google or M$ will make sure chrome doesn't play well with 365 or visa-versa).

We tinkered with chromebooks on a brief trial and had issues with authentication on our radius based wireless and smoothwall proxy.

 

I daresay theres way around these but we ran out of time and would probably need to buy a chromebook to fully test it again. I'd be interested to hear in what sort of environments (i.e wireless and filtering) people have got their chromebooks working?

We use device based Radius authentication for the wireless connection onto a MERU system and user based authentication after they log into the chrome book and hit smoothwall. It's a bit clunky but does work. It would be nice if the chromebooks could exchange the user authentication with smoothwall via Kerberos, NTLM or some such.

Yes currently we do not support any kind of chromebook filtering or remote access I do say currently...
