[SOLVED] Win 8.1 updates failing: 80244022

Didn't want to necrobump this thread so I thought I'd start my own.

 

We currently have 4x Windows 8.1 Dell tablets that just refuse to update. 3 of them are immediately failing as soon as I try to check for updates and giving me error 80244022

 

The other one of them is just doing, well, nothing. Going to Update and Recovery via TIFKAM results in the loading animation idly spinning for all eternity and doing it via desktop control panel results in the mouse pointer getting the blue circular loading animation and then nothing (and for extra points, the control panel then ends up unresponsive!)

 

I have run the Windows Update Troubleshooter (although the url does read #1TC=windows-7) on two machines, one with the error code and the other being the unresponsive one.

 

The one giving the error code returns with:

Service Registration is missing or corrupt - Fixed

Windows Update error 0x20070490(2014-02-12-T-09_12_27A) - Fixed

Problems installing recent updates - Fixed

However returning to Windows Update (even after a restart) results in the same behaviour with the same error code. Not exactly 'fixed', no?

 

 

The unresponsive one just stays on "Detecting problems" and doesn't proceed any further.

 

We do use WSUS here but 20+ other tablets have installed updates beyond this point, so I'd hesitate to say it's a problem with that.

Solution!

 

It would seem that in order to use WSUS, Windows 8.1 requires the proxy server to be set and Bypass proxy server for local addresses to be checked.

The 3 that were getting Error 80244022 did not have the bypass ticked, the fourth that wouldn't search at all had no proxy set.

 

I don't see why this would be an issue, it certainly shouldn't be (and isn't on Windows 7, you can use WSUS without any proxy settings at all..) but I'll leave the solution here for anyone that may end up in the same spot of bother.
