Smoothwall and internal / outbound eMail issues

Smoothwall UTM, RM Easymail with priority admin users running Outlook on desktops to front end Easymail system.

 

When Smoothwall was first introduced, the outlook users had to change their outgoing settings to point to the IP address of the Smoothwall UTM in order for outgoing mail to work. Maybe a co-incidence, but following internet issues over the summer, the outlook users are now not able to send mail to either external addresses or to users within the same Easymail domain. The messages the users are trying to send are obviously getting to the Smoothwall UTM as I can see a record of them showing in the eMail/queue area of the Smoothwall admin program. Most report a problem of "delivery temporarily suspended: host in.mx.ifl.net[217.181.2.36] refused to talk to me: 554-in4.m..." and we know from testing that they are not getting through to the recipients, well at least not all as it looks like a couple of externally addressed messages may have been delivered.

 

So it looks as though Smoothwall is trying to send the messages off to RM to process, but RM is rejecting the messages. Troubleshooting so far seems to suggest that Easymail is no longer 'trusting' Smoothwall as an MTA and rejecting messages as a result.

 

no changes have been made within the internal infrastructure. The Internet issues over Summer were due to the ISP having made an accidental configuration change on the firewall that caused all our inbound internet traffic to be redirected to another school. So external changes we know have been made.

 

RM are looking in to this, as have been Smoothwall. RM say no changes have been made in their environment that might cause this sudden lack of communication.
