[ms office - 2013] Apply border to text

A tutor has come to us with an exam question using Word 2013 (the problem exists in 2010 too).

 

The method that the exam accepts as a pass doesn't work when using Word (the exam uses a simulated version). Said method is ...

 

Highlight some text

In the paragraph 'block' on the 'Home' tab, expand the borders menu then go to "Borders and Shading"

Change the "Applies to" option, in the dialog box that appears, to "Text".

Click on the bottom border button in the preview area.

Click OK

 

No matter what border button or setting is pressed, the border is always set to surround the text. It doesn't seem possible to have part of a border (to the left, top, bottom, right).

I've tried in Word 2010 too, and that does the same thing.

There also doesn't seem to be any mention of this on any site I've seen (so far). Most examples only use the paragraph option for "applies to", which works as it should.

Isn't a "bottom border" an underline?

Yeah ... but this is an exam, and it'll only accept a "bottom border". Might of been easier to say left or right border. Even the tutor thinks it's a silly question. Would be easier to have text in a text box and the border wrap around that.

Totally stupid, not only is it not possible, it's not even something that anyone would ever use if it were possible - that's what the underline button is for!

 

I think you need to report it to the exam board and get it changed - I'm sure if you tell us which exam board and the specific exam this is in, there'd be people here willing to report it too to try to give your complaint some weight

Does highlighting the text and using the border icon on the toolbar work?

LosOjos - Pretty sure it's an exam set by Enlight, not sure if they are the examining body though. I'll let the tutor know the that the top experts have confirmed it's not possible

It does, but that applies a border to the paragraph whereas the exam question is asking for a border to be applied to the text only.
