Pinning items to taskbar globally

I'm trying to pin an item to users taskbar globally for all users using GP.

 

Not having any success even using the pinitems.vbs script that's on the net. By default users get IE + Windows media player, i can see those two shortcuts in this folder:

\\PC\c$\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar

 

adding more to there doesn't reap any rewards, deleting one of the two existing ones just breaks either of them from showing up on the next logon too.

 

I want to remove the two existing ones and add in chrome instead, any suggestions?

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh i had no idea there was quick launch in the drop down, to think i was using that to create shortcuts only yesterday too! What a pillock, will give that a go cheers

Ok that works to the extent that the shortcut file appears in the correct location, but im still only seeing IE and WMP links on the taskbar itself...something somewhere is stopping this from working properly.

is it worth trying it on a new blank user with no other gpos running maybe its a conflict somewhere?

Ok got it working, it was a group policy setting.

 

Now, i want to remove IE from the taskbar, but if i delete it manually be it as the user or via deleting it from the quick launch folder the next time i logon i get no quick launch shortcuts at all, any ideas how i get rid of that without breaking the functionality?

gpp but instead of create/update set it to delete?

 

or the always handy attrib+h filename and just hide it?

Hmm if i try either of those i get the same problem, the moment the IE link is hidden or removed etc. none of the quick launch links reappear.

 

Even stranger is making it hidden, logging on and finding the quick launch icons gone, then logging off, making it unhidden and logging on again they still dont reappear until i've deleted the profile and recreated it. Frustrating.

This is even more frustrating.....it works fine on first logon, but when i logoff that user and logon again all the quick launch icons are gone. :|

Copying the shortcuts via GPP isn't enough. When you pin an app to the taskbar Windows also makes some changes to the registry.

 

You will need to use script like the one linked below to pin applications to the taskbar...

As per above you need to script it, this one allows unpin as well:

However I've found when run at logon the unpin doesn't seem to kick in for Media Player and IE (script almost seems to run too quickly for Explorer to take the input), however pinning new icons works fine
