e-class Posted July 18, 2014 Posted July 18, 2014 Hi, Need a really simple MIS type database for keeping pupils details in etc. I think I remember someone saying they had written their own Access Database for pupils at their school but I can't find the thread. Just need something simple otherwise I've found a students template database in the MS site. Thanks
matt40k Posted July 18, 2014 Posted July 18, 2014 Think alot of people have spoken about it, not sure how far anyone has got - beyond ScholarPack which has become a very successful commercial product. What's this for? I know Arbor offer a free startup service for opening schools, there are a number of open-source projects however they are aimed at other countries - @bringmoredata blogged about a few - Bring more data: You want a free School Information System? Try SchoolTool.
e-class Posted July 18, 2014 Author Posted July 18, 2014 Matt40k, Thanks for the info. I don't think scholar pack do a free version anymore and had a look at some of the open source ones, SchoolTool being one of them. FreeMIS was another but that's not been worked on for ages. Might have to give it a go and try and kick something off. It's only for a very small school that only really needs a very basic system in place to replace their current methods. Thanks Think alot of people have spoken about it, not sure how far anyone has got - beyond ScholarPack which has become a very successful commercial product. What's this for? matt40k Posted July 18, 2014 Posted July 18, 2014 Just make sure you build it for the right reasons - if you're doing it for kicks off your own back, fair enough. If it's to save money, just remember you can buy SIMS .net for the same cost of around 5 days effort (assuming your in education and paid peanuts).
NotSoFast Posted July 18, 2014 Posted July 18, 2014 Sounds several orders of magnitude cheaper than our Sims quote... 1
matt40k Posted July 18, 2014 Posted July 18, 2014 SIMS .net is actually really cheap, the problem is everything is a bolt-on. You want to do assessments, that's extra, you want to do lesson registers, that's extra, you want a finance package, that's extra, timetabling, extra, dinner money, extra, send texts, extra, accept online payments, extra, it's all extra. If you look at the break down the core product is normally the cheapest thing on the quote!
