Garacesh Posted July 8, 2014 Posted July 8, 2014 Plus, DDR4 and then new chipsets are out probably within the next two months. Oooh. Source?
Arthur Posted July 8, 2014 Posted July 8, 2014 so prices will dramatically drop DDR3 prices are going to increase soon. Better stock up!
abillybob Posted July 8, 2014 Posted July 8, 2014 Oooh. Source? DDR4 memory for desktops expected to arrive in third quarter | PCWorld
Arthur Posted July 8, 2014 Posted July 8, 2014 (edited) Oooh. Source? DDR4 RAM is already available in Japan. 16GB (2x8GB) is approx. £248 inc. VAT. Edit. Crucial is selling DDR4 ECC RAM: http://uk.crucial.com/gbr/en/memory-ddr4 Edited July 8, 2014 by Arthur
Garacesh Posted July 8, 2014 Posted July 8, 2014 Hm. Well if Crucial said desktop and server RAM were coming at the same time.. And they're already selling ECC memory.. Stands to reason it won't be much longer then for desktop RAM (That Crucial page is blocked for me though, @Arthur so can't check myself)

Garacesh Posted July 8, 2014 Posted July 8, 2014 That's... Actually not a bad price. Better than I expected.
Arthur Posted July 8, 2014 Posted July 8, 2014 That's... Actually not a bad price. Better than I expected. X99 motherboards and Haswell-E processors aren't going to be cheap though, especially if you want a six-core CPU. DDR4 won't be available on mainstream motherboards until late 2015.
flyinghaggis Posted July 8, 2014 Posted July 8, 2014 (edited) Looks to be around double the price of DDR3. I don't expect DDR4 will make enough of a difference to performance to justify that kind of price hike but it may be worth it in another year or so when the price gap narrows. AFAIK Intel doesn't have plans to release any new high end desktop processors this year (other than the latest 4790k devils canyon upgrade) so we'll probably have to wait until the release of broadwell in 2015 before we start seeing desktop chipsets that can use DDR4 to any meaningful effect. I keep waiting for Intel to unveil the next big performance jump but every year they disappoint me with an incremental 10-15% increase over the previous gen. I'm still using a 5 year old i7-920 as my main PC and struggling to find a reason to upgrade it! Edited July 8, 2014 by flyinghaggis

But in 2015/16, when I'm looking to build myself a new rig....
mac_shinobi Posted July 8, 2014 Posted July 8, 2014 DDR3 prices are going to increase soon. Better stock up! Looks like it may cost a bit more to build my Z97 PC come January
Garacesh Posted July 8, 2014 Posted July 8, 2014 Looks like it may cost a bit more to build my Z97 PC come January I've just outlined a z97 PC for a buddy who's looking to get into PC gaming. It certainly won't be the best rig in the world, but at £650 for everything except desk and speakers, it'll do alright

Garacesh Posted July 8, 2014 Posted July 8, 2014 Ha! Nice. I never win anything Maybe it's got something to do with the fact I very rarely enter any competitions? - - - Updated - - - Ha! Nice. I never win anything Maybe it's got something to do with the fact I very rarely enter any competitions?
