Creating exam accounts and locking desktops and laptops down

Below is how i create the accounts but was wondering if anyone knows how to make it more secure?

 

 

 

Create an ‘exam’ account and give the account administrator rights

 

 

Putting wordpad and notepad on the desktop

Start, all programs, accessories, RC on the icon, send to desktop

 

Change the power settings

Start, control panel, power options

‘Turn off the display’ and ‘put the ‘computer to sleep’ turn to never

Change advanced power settings, change ‘hard disk’ and ‘display’ to never

 

Disable word, excel, powerpoint and folder office 14

Start, my computer, c:\, program files, Microsoft office, office 14

RC on excel, properties, security, edit, add, locations (put in admin password), change the location to eg:- WGSB-08, ok,

In the object name:- type ‘exam’, ok. Click ‘deny’ to all the tick boxes, apply ok

Now do the same for ‘word’ and ‘powerpoint’ and up a level and on the folder ‘office 14’

 

Disable IE

You need to take ownership of the folder to be able to make any changes

Start, my computer, c:\, program files, Internet explorer

RC on IE icon, properties, security, edit, add, locations (put in admin password), change the location to eg:- WGSB-08, ok,

In the object name:- type ‘exam’, ok. Click ‘deny’ to all the tick boxes, apply ok

Desktop recycle bin delete

RC on the desktop, personalise, ‘change desktop icons’ un tick ‘recycle bin’

 

Disable all programs

Start, RC all programs, ‘open all users’

RC programs, securiuty, edit, add, locations (put in admin password), change the location to eg:- WGSB-08, ok,

In the object name:- type ‘exam’, ok. Click ‘deny’ to all the tick boxes, apply ok

Start, all programs, do the same for the folders ‘accessories’, ‘maintenance’. Delete IE and windows updates

Disable toolbars

RC on the start, properties, customise.

Disable all the options here

We use laptops with Ubuntu installed. Everything stripped out apart from gEdit.

Are the laptops solely used for exams or are they used throughout the school and then for exams at exam time?

We use locked down users in an "Exam" Security Group. They get a very limited Start menu (Wordpad or any specific Exam software required). That Security Group is denied access to any shared areas and is Internet banned. That way they can use machines loaded for day to day use, but not access anything they shouldn't. Students don't know the password, the machines are logged on by the invigilator if there are only one or two using computers, or by one of the IT team if there are a few of them.
