jjohnsoncantell Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 Greetings, I think im being extremely thick here but im going to ask anyway. Is profile manager used for deploying apps to osx? Or is it simply for only the management side of osx and deploying apps to ios only? Thanks James
seawolf Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 You can use it to deploy App Store apps (VPP), but not pre-packaged apps. For those you will need to use Apple Remote Desktop, DeployStudio, Casper Suite, Munkiserver/Simian, FileWave, etc. 1
jjohnsoncantell Posted July 2, 2014 Author Posted July 2, 2014 its vpp apps im trying to use. I downloaded garageband through the vpp, added my macbook in the devices but dont have the option to push it to it.
seawolf Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 VPP Apps can only be assigned to a user or group, not a device because an Apple ID must be used to accept the invitation or redeem the code depending on what type of VPP license management you chose. Update: see http://help.apple.com/profilemanager/mac/3.0/#apd7FD061FD-D954-49E1-910D-75FF4FC47C76 1
jjohnsoncantell Posted July 2, 2014 Author Posted July 2, 2014 Thats what i was starting to think. I dont want the students to install apps so is my easiest option to assign the apps to say an admin user, then login with that user and install manually?
seawolf Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 (edited) Yes, you could do it that way. Or, you could package it with something like JAMF Composer, Iceberg, etc. and push it out using ARD. That's we do with a few of the VPP apps we buy from the App store. We've paid for the licensing, we just don't use Apple's default deployment method. Edited July 2, 2014 by seawolf 1
