I then tried to get clever and try and do Minorit Report style on Google Earth but came a cropper PDQ

 

Can you simulate mouse-over/hover with this one - is there some setting that can be tweaked?

Yes common issue that a lot of schools are sticking with 1024 x 768 resolution which was the common 4:3 resolution for old smartboards. Shame to spend £3000 on a fancy touch screen and limit the resolution.

 

I would run at 1080p if possible as icons can be enlarged in the windows settings. The newest SMART panel is 4 x the resolution of 1080p, which is getting overkill IMO.

 

Again if you are spending £3000 on the touch-screens is probably worth the extra £100 to get a matching widescreen monitor if required.

 

Another touch-screen brand (one of Jon-Pauls recommendations on another thread) is also a major monitor manufacturer and I know they include 1080p desktop monitors free of charge as part of the package.

If you're spending £3k+ on an E70 1920x1080 over HDMI is the only way worth going. Even that same resolution over VGA isn't good enough (imo). The extra £100 or so for a screen and graphics card will give you a much better end result.

 

We also installed a soundbar on ours last week as speech was basically inaudible using the built-in speakers, much better now

One further thing comes to mind - what is the earliest software version that works with them 11? 10? 9?

 

as I don't want to have to use any annual rented software!

When you buy the new Smart Screens it automatically comes with the new software. Smart generate a licence for this. You don't have to pay for this but if you want ot upgrade each year you now have to pay.

We've had problems with the 6065's we have installed. There is a firmware issue which makes them pretty much unreliable/unusable - Smart has NO IDEA when this will be fixed. The 4K feature is more of a problem than a help. Nothing has 4K capability as standard, so you will have to add in some extra hardware to make it work. £45 PCIe cards work well. Then the 6065 image will be beautiful, but is an extended desktop - unless you have a 4K monitor on the teacher station, allowing you to mirror. You will need to get some software to add the command bar to the 6065. (Something like display fusion). After all of this, the icons are too small to be usable. You can scale up text and icons, but it's system wide, not display specific and applications such as Sims do not like scaled text. So, we have ended up a) using them as expensive TVs until the firmware fix finally materialises b) using them at lower than 4K if we are brave enough to attempt an interactive lesson. We will probably not be getting any more 6065 units. Nice idea - they just don't deliver the exciting Bett promise.

I understand the e70 is about to be discontinued. new 6065 has poor connectivity currently. Good new 70" unit from iboard and the iboard software opens both SMART & Promethean files.
