Reset a Procurve with broken buttons?

We have a procurve bought 2nd hand though with lots of config we need to clear. Problem is, the reset/clear buttons are long broken and connecting via serial doesn't offer much (and even then it'll probably be password protected). Is there any way to totally reset these besides the obvious approach that we can't use?

Are you sure it's password protected? If you can't get into the CLI you might need to open the case and short the buttons on the circuit board.

 

Which Procurve is it?

It's a 2600-8-POE. Can't say I'd feel entirely confident in shorting buttons on a powered up (and still functioning) switch though! I have tried several serial cables but none seem to produce anything on putty. In contrast, with out newer procures that use an RJ45 at the switch end, we can connect to the console on these fine (even when using a serial to USB converter). Not sure if the serial-to-serial ones need specific cables?

Can you see if it has picked up a DHCP address? Worth trying the Web GUI?

Are the buttons broken or have they been locked out by the config. The console is almost certainly serial even if it does look like a network port, just needs a rollover cable to serial to talk to it. Even if it is locked out it should still output bootup status when it is powered on.

No difference when turning the switch on with the console cable already connected

Technically the switch isn't faulty though.. it could be classed as user damage. Are you saying you just contacted HP and actually said the button is broken and they swapped it, no questions asked?

Nothing in DHCP.. I don't even know if it's on the same IP range as our network, despite the fact devices plugged in to it work on our network fine

Buttons themselves have been pushed through and/or snapped internally.. the pin goes straight through and no contact with a button is made (unlike our newish switches where you can feel straight away the small depression of the button(s).

 

This is the older style of switches which uses a serial port on the actual switch end (our newer ones with rj45 ports all work fine). Nothing can be done via the console as it doesn't seem to be making the connection.

 

 

the main thing is clearing the vlan configs though as currently we can't use all ports on the same network given it seems there is some vlan config internally that we can't get to and clear.

as @SYNACK says above, you should still be getting some kind of output via the serial cable when you turn the thing on. Could you try adjusting the baud rate that your terminal program (putty) is using to connect? I know that standard is 9600 (or something) but the previous owner may have upped it to 128000 - I've seen it done. Try it with each of the speed options and see if one gives an output.
