CNAME record not working as expected?

Hi,

 

Have a forward lookup zone for a domain set up internally.

 

Website is hosted externally for that domain by another company and is moving to another host.

 

As it stands at the moment we have:

 

WWW as the name and an A Record pointing to the IP of the external web site host. This works perfectly fine.

 

Our academy has moved us to a google sites hence no IP to point to just the site address.

 

Have removed the A record and set up a CNAME for WWW pointing to the web address but doesn't seem to be working. Just getting generic IE "webpage can't be found" page.

 

Am I expecting CNAMES to be doing something that shouldn't or am I missing something elsE?

Try pointing it to ghs.google.com or ghs.googlehosted.com and add in google's IP addresses.

What is currently set in the Data field of your CNAME entry for "www"?

 

Just link ADMaster suggested the entry for "www" should be pointing to ghs.googlehosted.com

Ah yeah. I've learnt you can only point CNAMES to the domain \ host. Well that's getting filed under "things I should probably already know"!

 

Thanks for the links and advice. I've taken it on board and put the changes in place. I'm now getting a "the requested URL / was not found on our server".

 

I'm trying to figure out if this is an issue with DNS now or whether our academy trust (yeah they having taken ownership of web hosting \ external DNS etc) have ballsed something up their end as at the moment, our web domain name is XXXXXschool.org and visiting that when off site redirects to sites.google.com/yaddayadda.

 

I'm wondering if they don't have the domain names set up within google correctly.

They've made a few change and it seems to be working. Cheers guys.
