Impero Patch Management Query

Anybody here use Impero's Patch Management?

 

I've spoken to Impero about it and they told me although you can schedule patches to be installed at a time of your choosing, we would have to manually go around our 750+ computers and manually stop all the software that Impero can update from automatically updating themselves as Impero has no way of disabling them itself.

 

For us the whole idea of implementing a patch management solution would be to control when the computers update so that the automatic updates that currently occur no longer disrupt lessons by taking a computer out of action as it's spending half a lesson updating for example.

 

 

My question for you guys is; if you use Impero's Patch Management solution - how have you disabled the auto-updates? Are there some group policy settings for the likes of iTunes, Acrobat Reader or Flash that can turn autoupdating off?

That is the same of any patch management software. If software has it owns update in it do not know of any third party patch man software that does that ... However you can use Impero to sort this issue. If config file send then use Impero to send it to all machines or reg key use remote command prompt to send it to all the machine.

We've been using it for a while - we've not looked into disabling any local updates, but if you have them checking regularly, that shouldn't be a problem as it should update them before they start prompting... certainly hasn't been here for us that I'm aware of... or if it has, it's been updated within a week and no one's said anything. Been using Impero now for a good few months and very pleased with it.

Just got the patch management installed but nothing is happening scan wise or updating.

Can't even get patch man to scan any computers.

 

Reading the above post. Do we really need to turn off automatic updates on each PC for the patch management to work?

No - I've always had automatic updates turned on (assuming you mean Impero's Automatic Updates?) and Patch works okay...

 

I'd recommend contacting support as they'll probably just remote on and sort it, which will save time trying to work it out yourself...

Sorry, no. I mean the software's own automatic updates. Adobe, java, flash etc..

 

Will contact support and see what they can do.

I've not specifically disabled anything and it seems to work OK...

I know its an old thread but have you considered PDQ deploy by Admin Arsenal? We have impero too but chose not to go with patch management as the pro subscription is cheap for one admin and they package updates for java, flash, silverlight (and many more) etc. The packaged deployments have built in registry settings for turning off auto update features, removing shortcuts and various other things and their support and guides are great. You can also set up schedules to check certain groups of computers which will push out missing updates. It also ties to Spiceworks inventory to get computers groups etc.

 

You can also create your own packages for msi and exe files or use it to distribute files etc. I've been using it for 18 months and its great. All of the above software is left out of our images and we have a nested package that we fire at newly imaged machines that installs all updates and additional software.

 

I'd recommend the free trial if you;ve not used it (and no I don't work for them!) ;-)

Sorry, late replying.

 

The problem was that patch management was not installed and working server side.

Once that was done, the machines that got added to the profiles started to install the software.
