USB to VGA adapter

I'm still struggling to get a second monitor on the Poweredge 840 because there's no way I can find to disable the onboard vga. So, I'm looking at a usb to vga adapter. Trouble is, the second monitor is to display video from the Premier Pro timeline, so I suspect a usb-vga converter is not going to handle the motion. I suppose I could switch the displays, so the onboard vga handles the display but I have heard that the converters can have an adverse affect on the existing output.

 

Does anyone have any experience with this. Might usb 3.0 be the answer?

According to several reviews on Amazon and Newegg, the HIS Radeon HD5450 Silence PCIe graphics card (P/N: H545H1GD1) will work in a Dell PowerEdge 840. Do you currently have any cards in the two PCI Express slots?

Updating the BIOS to A08 also helps according to the first link above.

The RAID controller is in the 1x8 and I've ordered a usb 3.0 to go in the 1x1. To be honest, that's a bit more than I want to spend and I think I have found a solution. I've bid for a Panasonic DVD player with IEEE1394 and I can feed the playback from Premier Pro into that. The TV in our bedroom has a dodgy Freeview tuner, so that can connect to the DVD recorder and we can get a nice new TV for the bedroom for the wife to watch her gardening programs in HD

 

Now all I have to do is find a quieter fan.

Not sure I understand the question, why is disabling onboard a requirement, I have windows 7 machines running eight moniters using onboard and three dual head gpus, why not just leave it enabled and uses a dual head card or use onboard as well for three.

 

You are right USB is terrible and even with displaylink and usb3 it is still never going to be as good as onboard let alone discreet.

The Poweredge 840 will only work with a small number of graphics cards. The one @Arthur mentioned being the only one I found. As I only want the second monitor to view playback from Premier Pro, providing my solution using firewire will be fine. It should also give me a better feel for colours.

In Windows 7 you also can't use GPUs from different vendors unless they both have WDDM v1.1 drivers. I'm not sure if the onboard does in the PowerEdge 840?

Yea, was on a phone and don't deal with Dell gear so had no idea of the age, all the ones I have setup have had the appropriate drivers going back a fair way though so never considered it. Glad the OP has found a solution, I know there are some pro grade - firepro ? - cards that can do quad head output that someone was using in Multipoint setups but if the motherboard is a pig then it may not have worked with it anyway.

Just tested and it works well. Firewire into camcorder and AV out to a 19" TV. Premier Pro set to output playback to the DV device. I now have a WYSIWYG display and it gives a mch more accurate colour rendition and how the titles will appear.
