cookie_monster Posted May 30, 2014 Posted May 30, 2014 Hi all, the title says it all. I'm planning to buy a GS5 I'd like it to be network free so it doesn't have lots of extra rubbish on. Anyone bought one for a good price? If so where did you get it? Cheers
free780 Posted May 31, 2014 Posted May 31, 2014 It still will have Samsung rubbish on. Im swaying towards the nexus 5 for this very reason and updates.
Arthur Posted May 31, 2014 Posted May 31, 2014 eBay is the cheapest place to buy the S5 if you don't mind getting the SM-G900H model (it doesn't have LTE). www.ebay.co.uk/itm/131190229067 (£379.99) The European model with LTE (SM-G900F) still costs over £500. www.handtec.co.uk/samsung-galaxy-s5-16gb-black-sm-g900fzkabtu.html (£515.99) www.clove.co.uk/samsung-galaxy-s5 (£552.00)
cookie_monster Posted May 31, 2014 Author Posted May 31, 2014 Arthur: LTE = 4G? I Definitely want that. Free780: I'm not that bothered about the Samsung apps as they've reduced the amount of them quite a bit compared to the GS3 Apur32: I'm looking at outright aa I'm hoping it will cost a bit less over 2 years and I havexa choice of any tarrif/network etc
cookie_monster Posted May 31, 2014 Author Posted May 31, 2014 I'm looking forward to the potential rural coverage that 800mhz should bring.
Arthur Posted May 31, 2014 Posted May 31, 2014 I'm not that bothered about the Samsung apps as they've reduced the amount of them quite a bit compared to the GS3 If the Galaxy S5 Active is anything to go by there will still be lots of Samsung apps. I'm looking at outright as I'm hoping it will cost a bit less over 2 years and I have a choice of any tariff/network etc Which network were you thinking of going with and how much data do you need? With some of the cashback deals available on contracts, they can work out cheaper overall compared to buying a SIM-free smartphone and spending £10-£15 p/m. www.moneysupermarket.com/mobile-phones/brands/samsung/galaxy-s5-black/
cookie_monster Posted May 31, 2014 Author Posted May 31, 2014 (edited) Well thats been the source of some debate in another thread. Currently with Voda but I'm wandering around with a second phone with a 3 SIM in it as I'm interested in their higher download limits, I'd like alot or unlimited as I spend alot of time outdoors away from wifi. I can always root it and take the Samsung apps off, I'm going to try Cyanogenmod on my GS3 as well to see what its like. Edited May 31, 2014 by cookie_monster

Yeh I've been taking a good look at the Nexus 5 as I like the vanilla look and updates. I'm just been swayed towards the GS5 due to the ultra low power mode, apparently it will switch to grey scale screen and no advanced features and you can get days of power from it. That could be very handy for me
free780 Posted May 31, 2014 Posted May 31, 2014 That will be the next killer app. Decent battery life. Currently you need to go with something like this. http://meetthebrick.com/uk/

Btw, Clove are currently selling the 32GB Nexus 5 for £280 which is £59 cheaper than Google! With the money saved you could get a portable USB battery? www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00CEZBKTO www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00F91KMHG
cookie_monster Posted May 31, 2014 Author Posted May 31, 2014 I do actually have a portable battery pack, just a pain to carry in my pocket etc. I also like the SD card port on the GS5. That is a very tempting price though
