I have a problem, that I don't think has a solution but worth asking just in case...

I have a small HP EX490 server that simply hosts files for streaming, oh and it does 1 PC Backup (which im not too fussed about)...

I have a bigger server that is on for testbed stuff...I want to move the contents onto the bigger server in a VM, so I can have a bigger server to do the testbed stuff on and host the smaller server stuff...

Can you time (or script/software solution) a hypervisor to come on and go off? so pausing the VM's etc...I don't think ive ever seen it done so doubt it exists...

Cheers!

ESXi 5.1 (the free version) has the option to start up VMs when the host powers up, as well as the option to shut the VMs down when the host is shut down. You could then use Wake on LAN to turn the host on if needed.

This is true, but where am I going to get the WOL script to run from? Suppose I could use a startup script to start the server when a client starts up...send a WOL Packet...hmmm! Interesting...
