zag Posted May 21, 2014 Posted May 21, 2014 8.x is a donkey of an operating system. I'm sure 9 will be perfect and a huge advance in the right areas, so waiting for that. In my opinion, being a good network manager means you can see the technology for what it is (and isn't) and Windows 8 (just like Vista) was one to avoid.

The way I see it is if a student goes and buys a computer in a shop then the school should reflect it. Like it or not, Win 8 is how you use a computer in 2014 and would hate my students to be on the back foot. Also it didn't help when I went on a training course a couple of years ago with one of those XP and open office till I die types. Full Windows 8 deployment here and never looked back. Login times are up and issues are down. Working on my 8.1 deployment for summer now and its looking good. Only problems we ever really had was customising that start screen on the original 8 but nothing a few file copies couldn't fix. Love it. Lets be honest, the tech companies know what we want long before we do and I have given in complaining about it as the world moves forward without you otherwise. Edited May 21, 2014 by robjduk

The start screen would have our phone/helpdesk ringing off the hook. I would kinda like 8 for hyper-v but that seems to be the only reason. Also the fact that windows 7 image takes a good 10 hours to build and capture due to the updates. M$ won't do a SP.

free780 Posted May 21, 2014 Posted May 21, 2014 Tried that. I've ran the dism command against a wsus server. Dism /Image:e:\image /Add-Package /PackagePath:"\\wsusserver\wsuscontent\*" It didn't seem to pick up everything. I'll need to try it again.

I used WSUS Offline to pull all the relevant Windows 7 updates to a folder first before running that command. I just found it was far more useful for filtering out all the other updates that aren't for Windows 7. Running 2012 R2 servers here, hoping to get rid of 3 2008 R1 servers over the next year. 1 of those R1 boxes is hosting Exchange 2007, which I would like to possibly move to a 2008 R2 box at least. I've got Windows 8.1 Pro on my PC, but it's not going to be rolled out until the Microsoft Start menu is back, plus we need to get more modern computers in most of the classrooms. Our staff are just about comfortable with Windows 7 right now.

We have 1 XP machine due to there being a laser cutter not being compatible with even Vista About 50 Windows 7 machines About 100 Windows 8 Machines About 400 Windows 8.1 Machines (all Classrooms and office PCs when people need a rebuild etc.) Now it's mandatory :-) Just love it (except really bad printing problems in a thread I created) - "Windows 8/8.1 Deleted Printers Reappearing Multiple Times" Other than that - love it!
TheGoodGuy Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 I love windows 8.1, things configure so much more easily and I find that connectivity and group policies being applied are also much better. Probably also due to us using 2012 on the server. Also find windows 8.1 to be much faster than windows 7, especially if you set the visual settings to "performance". You barely notice any difference except everything is much faster! Another big tip is to use the remove apps script, works much faster without those, at the very least turn the live tiles off. About half the computers in the school are now on 8.1, rolling out the rest soon. (I tweak each build for where it is being deployed before I deploy it).
