Editing of an exported Wifi connection config file

Afternoon,

 

We have hidden the SSID of our curriculum network, due to the fact we have too many personal devices hooking up to IP adresses in our DHCP range A few days ago we had hid the SSID, and then all the staff laptops wouldn't connect the next morning. It came to light that the setting for automatically connect to hidden SSID was unticked. Which my tech had gone around everyone's laptop and switched in on.

 

I don't know if it is an RM CC4 security default setting, but there is no way in the console to ensure that the box is ticked via the management console. We have exported the profile and had a look and there is config file (.wcf?) and was wondering if there is any additional code that could be added to the file that could include these settings to be turned on?

 

Any ideas people?

Have you tried setting this command in a script somewhere? (I have no experience of RM CC4 btw)

 

netsh wlan set blockednetworks display=show

Is the network open or are you talking about a guest network?

No network isn't open, its the curriculum network. We have exported the WCF to the USB stick, which contains all the WPA2 key settings etc, but before we exported the profile, we ticked the connect to hidden SSID. Once you re-import the WCF, it doesn't remember the hidden SSID settings.

You could try exporting the wireless profile using the netsh command. This will give you an XML file with the config

 

Then create a .cmd file along with the XML on the USB stick. Run this command line first:

 

netsh wlan add profile filename="DRIVE:\FILENAME.xml" user=all

 

Followed by the line I mentioned above. Not 100% sure but it might work

Will give it a go Monday, just irks me seeing so many personal devices connected to the curriculum network (well not authenticated but hogging the addresses) - suppose if there is no way around this is do bring the lease of the addresses down in DHCP...

Just curious, does your Wifi network use some kind of authentication key? WPA etc? Because if so, how have kids managed to get it?

 

We are setting up a secondary SSID for students using Unifi controllers. Has a separate VLAN and IP range which we can make have very short leases etc - and also throttle their bandwidth down to not hog all of the staff Wifi!

Yes we use WPA2 and no one, not even the staff know it. But when they attempt to connect, DHCP will give them an address (granted this is more than likely an accident as all our SSIDs including the guests are quite similar).
