Tall_Paul Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 A quick post to ask advice from my fellow 'geekers! We are currently using BMC Service Desk Express software which is installed on 2 x86 servers running Server 2003. We pay quite a lot in maintenance each year, and the software is also EOL. For obvious reasons I need to upgrade\migrate and am considering my options. I inherited this when I took the job and, while it works well, it is way above what we require in a Servicedesk software and is also too costly. I've had a quote from BMC which was, erm, a bit eye-watering. I'd like to implement a more slimline and cheaper Helpdesk solution but I think I'd need someone with DBA experience to extract all our current data from the database (it has all our old calls and also has all our assets listed). Has anyone here been through this situation before and can you offer any advice regarding both what Helpdesk software you moved to and how you managed the migration?
cpjitservices Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 Cheaper ? osTicket :: Support Ticket System | osTicket Job Done. Have implemented this at a local college with over 2000 users. Works a treat.

Works a treat. What about migrating from a different helpdesk solution and bringing the data over? Also, does that do asset management? I couldn't see it in my brief look at the blurb. cpjitservices Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 No Idea, im running an older version of it to be honest. I don't need asset management as I use other software for that. As for migrating... no idea my friend I built the helpdesk as a clean solution so we didn't need to migrate anything over.
Tall_Paul Posted May 13, 2014 Author Posted May 13, 2014 Ah, it's the migrating that is key to my question unfortunately. It'd be nice if I could start again, but that isn't possible.
cpjitservices Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 Why not just archive everything like we did... everything that was on the old helpdesk is still live on another server but moving forward we use the web based ticketing system. Our old solution goes back 6-7 years or so ago, we still have all of that data. We've never needed to go back through it all yet either.
Tall_Paul Posted May 13, 2014 Author Posted May 13, 2014 That's not a bad idea, but the problem is all our assets. Scanning them in took weeks, and I'd prefer not to have to do that again.
cpjitservices Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 (edited) I believe Spiceworks might be the solution for Asset Tracking.... And it also has a built in Web Help Desks... I think there's quite a few people on here using it too. Tall_Paul Posted May 13, 2014 Author Posted May 13, 2014 If anyone has migrated to it from another helpdesk solution then I'm all ears. As I said, a vanilla install isn't the answer unfortunately (though it would be lovely if it was).

Free IT Community, Help Desk, and Network Monitoring - Spiceworks Free IT Asset Management Software from Spiceworks +1 for Spiceworks, but I can't say we migrated. We didn't have a helpdesk system in place before we got it. Very good for network software audit, though. Lets us find those pesky toolbars with ease 1
jb2201 Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 Might be worth contacting some of the Helpdesk solution providers, they may strike you a deal and migrate your data for you if you purchase their software. They probably have a few developers after all.
Tall_Paul Posted May 13, 2014 Author Posted May 13, 2014 I've just spoken to NetHelpDesk who say they can help. Has anyone here any experience of any of their products?
