Cannot run executables from local drive but can from UNC path

Hi,

 

I Just stumbled across an issue in Windows 8.x where running exe/msi/reg files from a local drive as a domain administrator results in a "Your system administrator has blocked this program......" system message however, mapping to this local drive through UNC path i.e. \\computername\share allows me to run these files without issue.

 

If this was SRP or permissions related then I'd expect to be blocked regardless of method used to browse to the location.

 

It feels like a security policy setting in place but am not sure at this time. Any ideas?

When you right-click an EXE and choose "Run as Administrator", does it work from the local drive then?

Yes, sorry I thought I'd mentioned that running as administrator works fine but for MSI's I have to run as another user and then enter credentials of the local administrator and can't edit/merge reg frags unless I open regedit and import them directly.

 

All workarounds but a PITA when you're used to simply running files like these without the palaver and as already mentioned, doesn't require any of these workarounds when browsing to the local drive via UNC path

 

There's just no consistency in this instance!
