timbo343 Posted April 24, 2014 Posted April 24, 2014 Dell charges £5 to switch on power-saving for new PCs (it takes 5 clicks)
Arthur Posted April 24, 2014 Posted April 24, 2014 It must be a slow news day at The Register. Dell have been doing this sort of thing for years and years. What's the problem?
Trapper Posted April 24, 2014 Posted April 24, 2014 (edited) If you buy hundreds of the it probably saves a fair amount of cash in staff time though! Edited April 25, 2014 by ZeroHour
Steve21 Posted April 25, 2014 Posted April 25, 2014 If you buy hundreds of the it probably saves a fair amount of cash in staff time though! Not really, we either do them all manually, takes a few seconds per machine, or deploy it via the Dell BIOS program. Deffo not worth it. Steve
Roberto Posted April 25, 2014 Posted April 25, 2014 Last time we asked for quotes on a bunch of PCs without optical drives, suppliers who wanted to push HP desktops were quoting us a standard HP model that shipped with an optical drive and quoting £20 per machine to remove the drive and replace it with a blanking plate. This kind of thing is not uncommon with the really large suppliers. I'm inclined to agree with Arthur here - must be a slow news day for el reg to bang on about this because Dell, at least, are being up front about this rather than just charging you extra and trying to bury it in the quote when you try and place an order with these options.
visioN Posted April 25, 2014 Posted April 25, 2014 The Register was moaning about Dell charging £20? or something for installing Firefox. Yes it's free, yes it's easy... but still a pain for them to customise their normal image
