johncollinswork2 Posted April 21, 2014 Posted April 21, 2014 Ok, not a school related issue, but I am a teacher! Dell Inspiron 1545 used to connect fine to my home Wireless - now doesn't. It can detect my wireless link, but not connect to it. NOTHING has been changed prior top this happening. The router itself is fine and other devices connect to it no problem. The laptop connects with the ethernet cable plugged in fine. (using it now) I have tried the following to correct issue: * Full Windows 7 re-install / Full Windows Update * Re-install drivers from dell site. * Reset router to factory settings * IP Config renew / flush dns etc..etc... * Laptop does not connect to other wifi * Uninstalled antivirus / firewall etc... Could it be a hardware fault???? Would really appriciate help - wasted about 4 hours on this.
FN-GM Posted April 21, 2014 Posted April 21, 2014 Possibly a hardware fault. You could try updating the BIOS. Also check if the Wireless is enabled in the BIOS.
mac_shinobi Posted April 21, 2014 Posted April 21, 2014 (edited) Should be instructions on how to dis-connect the wireless card and re-seat it along with the antennae cable(s) back into / onto the same connectors that they were using originally connected to and put it back together and try again Also maybe reset tcp/ip stack / winsocks using netsh command and update the wireless card driver ( I normally un-install it through device manager and tick the checkbox to delete the driver and then either reboot and install the driver freshly and reboot again and then try again or just install the new wifi card driver after removing it and reboot TCP/IP reset command from a command prompt running as admin Netsh int ip reset Winsock reset from command prompt Netsh winsock reset If its windows 7 may be worthwhile resetting the firewall to defaults and checking what profile has been set against the wifi connection ie public, home, work etc Just wondering can you get the wifi to work in safe mode / from a linux live disc etc Get the drivers from the wireless card manufacturers site ( not dell ) see if they are any better Edited April 21, 2014 by mac_shinobi

I have tried drivers direct from intel site also. I've repeatedly tried all of the cmd lines also... There is a guy on a DELL forum who listed 6 key drivers and a specifc order to install them, which I have also tried to no avail. I mainly use the laptop wirelessly to connect to my tv (to watch the footy from fsi) and managed to get around it bouncing the laptop to my tv via the ipad and splahtop, but the wifi not working is just insane. I'd rather not have to open the laptop up. I'll wait and see if any other ideas emerge... and yes, I have pressed ctrl + F2 !!! Edited April 21, 2014 by johncollinswork2
Dos_Box Posted April 21, 2014 Posted April 21, 2014 Have you tried simply rolling back the driver? If you have had a Microsoft Update driver sneak in via the back door it can, in my experience, cause no end of fun and games. 1
mac_shinobi Posted April 21, 2014 Posted April 21, 2014 ftp://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_laptop/esuprt_inspiron_laptop/inspiron-1545_service%20manual_en-us.pdf#page38 Page 38 and 39 Fairly straight forward to at least disconnect and re connect the antennae cables , whilst you are there maybe un do the two screws so you can re seat ( take the wifi card out and re seat it back firmly ) ensuring you re connect the cables into the same connectors that they were originally connected to

mac_shinobi Posted April 21, 2014 Posted April 21, 2014 I was thinking power management stuff whether windows or power management software but then if that was the case it would be like you didn't have a wifi card as you wouldn't even see the wireless networks and the same if it were disabled in the bios as windows wouldnt see your wifi card in device manager let alone see the wireless networks Maybe a driver issue as per dos box's suggestion
