Long running? Only 86 years, though perhaps it's the longest-running laboratory experiment....the Broadblak experiment on wheat at Rothamsted has been running since 1843 (or 1852 if you want to be purist about it!). That's a good few researchers' working lives......

I'm sure for the past few centuries two blocks of different metals have been stacked on each other and are very, very slowly merging through some form of quantum mechanics which: a) I can't remember from A-Level Chemistry and B) Cannot find on Google!
