Strangest thing! I have an older laptop here (was shipped with Vista). Just reinstalled to Windows 7 last week.

It boots up fine, loads up no problems but when I open the start menu and right click 'Computer' and try to open the 'Manage' option - the start menu crashes. It opens and closes as normal, but nothing highlights as you scroll over it and I get a 'ding' when I try to click on anything - it's almost like there is an error message up somewhere that I can't see. I can close and reopen the start menu fine, the rest of the laptop runs fine, but just the start menu is almost inactive.

If I reboot, everything again runs fine. I can open anything on the start menu except the management console.

It does however all work in safe mode.

Really very confused! Anyone seen this before?

(Hope this all makes sense?!?)

Have you run a memory tester like memtast86+ on it and after that have you updated the bios and run a full scan of the hard drive with the vendor tools. If the install is fresh it sounds like dodgey hardware.

I have seen MMC.exe get bugged before but I sadly didnt fix the problem I had, I wiped the rig but you have a clean machine by the sounds of it.

Turn off Aero effects and see if that helps.

Thanks guys - also trying a full windows update - quite a few didn't go on last time due to the teacher needing to take it home half way through installation...!
