Looks like Intel are also about to release the x99 desktop platform which will introduce support for DDR4 along with a new range of 8 core CPU's

Blog - Intel's 2014 line-up: It's looking good for enthusiasts | bit-tech.net

As with most newly released memory types I suspect it'll be a massive hike in price for a minimal increase in overall speed compared to DDR3 but it's nice to see DDR4 finally starting to appear.

Intel's forthcoming 4th gen Haswell processors should also support 16GB Non-ECC DDR3 UDIMMS. This means it would be possible to put 32GB RAM in a mini-ITX motherboard or 64GB in a standard mATX/ATX motherboard. :)

The JEDEC specifications for DDR3 do account for the use of 8 Gbit packages (either one 8 Gbit die or two 4 Gbit dies per package), should these be available. However I am told that currently there is a fundamental non-fixable issue on all Intel processors (except Avoton and Rangeley, other Silvermont (BayTrail) is affected) that means that these dies are not recognised. In their specifications for Ivy Bridge-E, Intel do state that 8Gb packages are supported (link, page 10), however this apparently has not been the case so far and I'M is working with motherboard manufacturers to further pin down this issue.

@mac_shinobi. A 128Gb module would technically be 16GB in size. Sorry for being pedantic. ;)

@Arthur :

So does that mean there won't be 128gb DDR4 memory modules as they will only be 16gb in capacity or what exactly ?

And I don't mind you being pedantic ( or whatever you want to call it )

I think he is talking about the size of each memory chip on the module so a 128GB chip would be made up of 8 16GB chips or 16 8GB chips on a single module board.

If that's the case the 128gb memory module would almost be like using raid 0 on a number of hard drives so you would get the capacity of all of the memory combined

I was thinking about the title of this thread when I posted that. i.e. the total size of the DIMM. :)

Bits vs bytes. ;)

So 128gb RAM and 512gb mSATA SSD etc ??

Haha why not give it 5 - 8 years and it could well be a possibility. Phones and tablets a like I believe will get more games from AAA titles and by then you will probably need something like this it'd be the norm! Look how far technology has come in just 14 years!

It still wont be enough to run Crysis.

Once they have shrunk the AMD 295x2 or Nvidia Titan Z to fit into a mobile device with an mSATA or similar type SSD Flash and 128gb DDR4 RAM ?

Dear Santa.......

Seriously though, it's a nice - and not a bit too soon - technology leap we've all been needing. @ZeroHour will still fill up whatever he gets anyway :p

I know it's going to be stupidly expensive on launch, but hopefully the prices should settle down for the average consumer.
