Im currently in the process of building a new rig. Ive chosen

 

I73930k as its only 5% difference from the 4770k.

asus rampage extreme mobo x79

Corsair 2400mhz ram quad channel 32gb

Nzxt 1000w modular psu

Nzxt full tower usb 3.0 case

Samsung evo ssd 120gb boot drive

Samsung evo pro 256gb x2 storage

Akasa venom voodoo cooler

 

However... I cant for the life of me decide on a gfx. Im looking at sli 690... but for futureproofing...... maybe a 780ti???? Maybe in sli????

 

Any ideas

They do say the 780's are rather bulletproof, so they'll certainly keep you ticking over for a couple of years. If you do want to SLI, then get the pair now and don't wait; case in point, my brother has a , wanted to SLI it up but could not source another one for a reasonable price outside of some dodgy looking eBay adverts, prices still comparable to what he paid for his new.

Just go for the 780 (Ti if you're flush) and sod the SLI, never works as well as promised, especially not for launch games. Better off saving the money for the next GPU upgrade down the road. Means you can cut down on your PSU as well to a ~750W unit, will be much cheaper and work more efficiently with a single GPU. Use some of that money saved to bump your boot drive from 120GB to 240GB, the 240GB drive uses all the memory channels so is quicker than the 120GB as it can make better use of parallelism.

 

2400MHz RAM won't be worth the price either, you'll hardly get any improvement from it as you're not running on integrated graphics. It's maybe 1-2% faster than 1600MHz in any real world situation (FPS) but you pay, what, almost twice as much? Up to you, but I don't reckon it's worth it except for bragging rights in forum signatures with artificial benchmarks.

I have a GTX780 driving 3 1920x1200 monitors. It can be dragged down by something like Far Cry over all three monitors at full whack but on a single monitor it glides along. No idea what prices are like now but I think it was difficult to justify the premium when I bought. I just took my brain out and locked it in a dark cupboard while my body took control of my credit card.

Why go for the slower SSD for the boot drive? Get a Pro over Evo for a boot drive.

 

As for GFX cards, 770GTX is a solid card and in SLI would be future proofed for quite a long while (easily 5-7 years), 690 is great, if you want to drop nearly a grand on a single card!

I will most likely buy a 780ti and get a lower watt psu.

 

@sonofsanta between stock 1600 and my current 2133.... there is a difference of 2-3 seconds boot time however point in hand.. ill go for 2133mhz ram which is a lil cheaper

If you have the cash to drop perhaps a custom water loop? XSPC dual bay res D5 pump combo couple of good thick 240rads should cover the CPU and GPU in a single loop.

Unless you NEED hyperthreading (which games wise, very few support still), you'd be better off (and have more change) with getting a 4670k - I know there's a massive core difference, but depends on what you're planning on doing it. Personally I'd go for the newer instruction set.

 

also, the haswell-e are going to be x99, so there's no upgrade path from that chip.

The RAM might be cheaper too - I hear sandy-E chips being really anal about RAM types

 

I'd also look at an AIO water cpu cooler.

Was already thinking about this, but i'm stuck between, wanting it, and do i really need it.

 

If i was to get it, it would most likely be a dual loop. 360 wb dual res d5 pump (they're so epic) and loop my mobo and cpu in one.

2nd loop would just be for the gfx.

 

But again, do i need one?! I have 3x 200mm fans and 4x 120 - 140mm fans in my case. Push pull works well, and i never go over 40 degrees (okay maybe sometimes during the summer, but generally, round 40).

I accept that it's your opinion, however, when looking at raw power, i'd still perfer the 3930k over the haswell.

 

I'm planning to use it to host a few game servers, other types of servers which i cannot disclose, video editing and of course, gaming.
