how do you automatically bind macs when using Netinstall??

I have created an image that installs Mavericks, ilife and iworks.

 

I want to have the ability to set the date and time/time zone automatically, have a set name but prefix with like a 1 or something and then automatically bind to my server.

 

is there any way to achieve any of this??

 

even post would be pretty good.

Are you using Deploy Studio‎ to do your imaging? For the date and time, point it to an NTP server. Deploy Studio will bind for you as part of the imaging process.

I've installed it but not really sure how to use it. I'm relatively new to macs so just experimenting. I'm an IT technician at a school, we have about 13 macs and 10 laptops. I created the image in Netinstall and made the packages in package maker.

It would definitely be worth your time figuring it out - it will do a much better job and once you have it set up, it's ace. You would need to have an admin iMac to run as the server though.

 

Otherwise it is likely to be a manual job to do the binding etc. Depends on how much effort you want to put in for 23 machines.

completely unrelated, I tried to install munki tools (similar to deploystudio) and now I have seemed to break my netrestore.

 

I typed the following into terminal:

 

cd /Users/Shared/

mkdir munki_repo

mkdir munki_repo/catalogs

mkdir munki_repo/manifests

mkdir munki_repo/pkgs

mkdir munki_repo/pkgsinfo

 

then:

 

chmod -R a+rX munki_repo

sudo ln -s /Users/Shared/munki_repo /Library/WebServer/Documents/

sudo apachectl start

 

now getting kernal errors on one mac and just a continuous spinning wheel on another. is it an easy fix??

Do you have a separate web server? I put Munki on that so i did not mess anything up on my Mac Server.

No, I'm guessing I've messed up the mavericks web server? Like I said I'm used to Windows but venturing into macs. I was doing so well....

I don't know enough about Munki really but it's difficult to see why the commands you have mentioned above would stop the web server from running. All you appear to have done is create some directories, apply permissions to them and create a soft link (shortcut) in the Munki directory pointing to the Webserver directory.

 

Was there a Munki installation you went through? Perhaps there may be someone better qualified on here to help?

Thanks. thats what I thought. But it apparently redirects traffic to the munki webserver. Thats the only thing I did so I know it has something to do with it!

In that case presumably if you delete the link file created in /Library/WebServer/Documents/ then that should fix it?

I tried that. What I did do which seems to have fixed it is repaired disk permissions. thanks
