Depixelating Japanese adult films

There really is a piece of technology for everything these days ExtremeTech (surprizingly the link is SFW).

 

I wasn't sure if I should post this or not, but I find it interesting technology. I wonder if you could use it to fill in a face when they blur it in a news broadcast? I have a couple of video enhancers from the days when you would copy VHS but these were simple video amplifiers, so if there was noise on the video signal, that got "enhanced" too! I guess technology has come on in the 25+ years I've had them; haven't used them for 20!.

a way round this for TV would be add a solid black dot rather than pixelate.

I remember reading about that. Emulators are definitely going to have to implement a similar technique since enlarging a SNES game from 256 x 224 to 3840 x 2160 (4k UltraHD) is going to look terrible otherwise.
