Moving RIS images to new Server

I have RIS set up ona oldish server that is going to be replaced. I have the new server coming in late this week. How/Can i move th eimages from one server to another.

 

i think/Read that if i set up Remote Installtion service on the new server first, then restore my images from the other server via NT Backup this should work?

 

Have any of you done this yet?

I just copied mine over using robocopy. I may have in the past just simply dragged and dropped. Make sure you restart the service when done.

we set the new RIS server up, installed the XP disc onto the server then stopped Ris on the old server. Then simply copied all Images excluding the XP image across to the new server and run the service, picked up fine

Yep, you just need to copy the files over. Theres nothing special to consider. RIS just looks for the .sif files and does the rest.

 

You'll still need to go through the initial "Creating RIS image from out of date XP disc that i am going to delete anyway to make room for my upto date images" process

You might like to consider keeping your old machine as a second RIS server. We use Windows 2003 DFS Replication to keep images synched on our two ris servers. This helps with load balancing and disaster recovery.
