HP Chassis Switches... What's What?

Ok Cisco I can handle.

 

4000 became 4500 and are in 3,6,7,10 slot configs..

And Theres the 6500 Serise...

 

Nice and simple.. ( Ok You have to now your Supervisors but it's straight forward.. )

 

 

Anyone give me a brife rundown on the HP's

 

I see 4108's 5308's and modern 5608's

 

I am going to buy possibly a 5308 and an edge switch ( more fun trying to work them out! ) to familiarise myself with the ODD world of HP. My new job mostly encompases a plethora of HP so need to get to know it a bit better.

Not used hp in about 6 months but...

 

4000m is well out of date, if you still have them in service get rid...

 

4108gl is a good switch, used as the main switch for a long time at my old school.

Chassis switch with 8 slots can take 24 port 100m and I think 6 or -6 port 1gb

Can also take iirc 2 port 1gb fibre per slot.

Limiting if you want 1gb to desktop and I don't think it can take 10gb modules or they were very expensive.

 

5308's I believe replaced the 4108s and can take 24 port 1gb and a larger amount of fibre SPF modules.

 

All are layer 3 managed again iirc, not sure on all e features of 5308 and 5608s.

 

I use extreme now which I can absolutely recommend, they can even come in less than hp in some cases, especially when looking at 10g links.

5300s are likewise, pretty ancient

 

Current (if getting on it a bit too) are 5400/8200zl which are almost the same, I believe they share modules but the 8200 can have redundant management card.

 

The first thing you need to know when you look at any procurve is this: HP or 3com.

I personally like the HPs (the old E named switches as they were, 3com being the As)

 

The 4108 was a bit weedy, the 5308 was ok but lacked much in the way of 10Gb, the 5412s were the best switches I ever bought!

Oh, if you want it for testing, the 2510s were ok, but you'd really need a routing switch to learn everything (beyond the 3800s which are a special case for the Provision procurves as they have actual stacking modules!).

5308 is ok to learn with, supporting most of the current features.

Yeah, I don't like the 3com hps... Returned a couple went hp first bought them out.

Sounds like a 5308 will do the job.

 

What about Cheap L3 and L2 managed edges for testing?

For cheap layer 3 switches, go for a used/refurbished 3com 4800G, this has been relabled by HP to an E4800. (Hint: try to get one with a white HP label on it, as with that one you get HP`s lifetime warranty. Without you get nothing...) The H3C S5500-EI is the same model. HP relabeled them to HP A5500-EI. Take a look at the release notes for routing support.

 

It it´s only about learning protocols, you could also take http://www.mikrotik.com/ or http://mininet.org/
