Dyslexia Reading for exams

Morning,

 

Just wondering what other school use in regards to pupils in exams who are allowed to have 'readers'. We've been told that human readers aren't supposed to be used now so electronic ones are needed. This also applies to writing down too where they would need something to type into too.

 

Previous years we just used an old laptop which was locked down with word but we may need 10 this year for it and we need more.

 

Interested in what software is used, I downloaded the free version of Clara reader but it keeps crashing and the web version relies on a rock solid internet connection which is fine.. until its not fine.

 

iPads have been mentioned obviously as they are the solution to everything but typing on them is not the easiest. Chromebooks need the internet too so that's out. Maybe a cheap laptop or does anyone know of a specialist device?

 

Swaying towards just buying the software and sticking them into rooms with PC's.

I think its more a school policy as we have so many who require readers and the faffing about with CRB checks is a pain.

I saw something recently about Window-Eyes - Offer for Users of Microsoft Office - which is free. No idea if it is any good, though...
