[sims] New server

Hi all,

 

We are moving MIS to Sims soon and I'm just wanting to get everyone's opinions on what my server setup should be.

 

On my old MIS u ran a separate joint Sql server to host the databases. Is this a good solution for sims or should I just dump everything on the dame server.

 

Also what specs do you run, it'll be a VM on hyper V so I'm pretty flexible on what I can assign.

 

Also any optimizations you can recommend would be great!

Our SIMS server is running Server 2008 R2 Sp1 (4GB Ram) as a MS Hyper-V virtual server.

The host server is :

 

• 2 x Intel Xeon Quad Core E5620 (2.40Ghz, 12mb, 5.86 QPI) Processor
  
• 1 x Intel Server System (SR2600URBRPR) for Xeon 5500 CPU
  

 

It hosts the SIMS Share (for clients), SQL Express Services, Solus 3 Services and Discover Services all under the 1 VM

 

Because our database is under 2GB we haven't upgraded to the full SQL Server

 

We have 30 workstations running sims from this server installation without a hiccup.

SQL express 2008 has a max db size of 10gb not 2gb.

 

We run our server also as a VM on free VMware esxi.

No worries your welcome, I'm not sure many schools would ever go above 2gb for 1500 pupils details. We have been stuck on 1.2gb for five years!!

isnt the issue with sql express the amount of RAM it can use?

Correct still limited to 1 CPU and 1gb ram.

Our SIMS.net and SQL database are on the same Hyper-V Virtual Machine running Server 2008 R2. The VM for SIMS.net has 16GB RAM and 4CPUs this is due to everything being on the same server. We run SQL 2008 R2 Full copy as this is such a large database used by 130 people or more all day, everyday. The only other thing I will say is make sure SIMS.net is the only SQL database installed on that SQL instance. This is stipulated in the terms and conditions of having the SIMS.net application.

we have recently had a new sims server - virtual server hyper V 8GB ram allocated

Server 2012 with MS SQL 2008 R2.

Separate drives for sql data and docstorage.

Quite a large school and all running ok so far.
