Is anyone doing Functional Skills tests this year, and if so, what offline email program are you using? In the old XP days we just used Outlook Express, however apart from Microsoft Outlook I can't think of any free software that would allow you to create a draft email offline and not send it.

 

Does anyone have any suggestions for a lightweight offline email client that doesn't need an account or connection to the internet that isn't Outlook?

Windows Live Mail or Mozilla Thunderbird would be my sugestions.

ISTR Pegasus Mail has an option to run as a local mail system.

 

You could roll a little LAMPS+ Sendmail/exim VM with a web email client doing local user mail only. Probably a little too much work unless you know your way round a unix/linux pretty well.

That just made me die inside a little. Thunderbird and Live Mail both require internet connection in order to work (why wouldn't they?).

I've got exactly the same problem, and all the student has to do is to open an email, populate the fields, take a screen shot and forget it.

It seems that now we're on Office 365, we get all sorts of mad intermittent problems opening ANY email client, (we've tried them all) not just Outlook on any shared PC. PCs dedicated to staff for example are OK.

 

We have followed RMs article TEC3447847 which basically suggests deploying MS Sign On Assistant, but that only worked for the first user who logs on and then subsequent users can no longer even open the Outlook client.

 

I'm toying with the idea of virtual PCs running XP, with the NIC disabled, then they might be able to open Outlook Express.

 

Does anyone have a work-around?

This may help someone next time these exams come round. I solved this problem by building a separate virtual Windows Server 2012 and deploying MS Outlook 2010 as a remote app. Making use of Microsofts grace period of 120 days it worked a treat. I created a RDP shortcut, bizarely, by access rdweb via GoogleChrome and distributing the shortcut in the usual way in RMMC.
